Dan Rubin's Superfluous Banter: Flickr Old Skool Badges @ Dan Rubin’s SuperfluousBanter

  • Dave Child · 2 years ago
    Heh, I like it.
  • Matthew Anderson · 2 years ago
Thanks, Dan. Don't mind if I do!
  • Patrick Haney · 2 years ago
Rock on. I took the liberty of adjusting the image so the diagonal badge is at the bottom right and not the top left, since it works better with my "ph" star avatar. If anyone wants that PNG, let me know, and I'll send it over (though it didn't take too long to make).

    Kickin' it old skool...

Done, but old skool style, with emboss and drop shadow, to keep things 'consistent', knowhatimsayin'? I ain't playin'!

Here's my PSD, too, from your auld schule source:

Man, I've had a Yahoo! account for years, so this was no big deal for me at all. I'd already done the switch back when they first did the deal. It's so transparent, I fail to see how this is even an issue.
  • Dan Rubin · 2 years ago
Always leave it to Anton to try and start a fight... dude, just because you can kick my ass, doesn't mean you should ;)

I'm not trying to make an issue out of the switch - I realize those of us who have any issue with the change are a small percentage of Flickr users, and I wouldn't really have an issue if I didn't already use my existing Yahoo! account for other things that have nothing to do with my online life. I actually have two existing accounts, mostly just to keep certain offline information separate, so this just means a 3rd Yahoo! account solely for Flickr.

But back to the badges: Pat, nice addition, I'll add it to the download links above if that's ok with you. Luke, you're so old skool! ;)

    Man, I'm such a sheep.

    Baaaa.
  • Matt Robin · 2 years ago
    [yoink!]

Cheers Dan - I'll use the Left Badge. As with Anton - I don't see the really big deal about making the Login switch to Yahoo (piece of cake for me as I already have a Yahoo! e-mail ID for non-web design related regular mail anyway)...but, I'll also use this badge because I think it's right to acknowledge that I'm among the Old Skool crowd too.
  • Marko · 2 years ago
Neat , I'll hook it up asap!
  • josue salazar · 2 years ago
I forgot to say I used this. thanks.
  • Mark Couvillion · 2 years ago
Thanks, Dan. A simple, yet effective way for us to <strike>exorcise</strike> exercise our elitist rights and show our superiority over those that came later.

I've also followed Luke's lead and put in some lush drop shadow.

I used to have an "old skool" account -- but also merged it into my Yahoo account. Do I get to use one still? ;)
  • Grant Neufeld · 2 years ago
Sigh. It's a shame this badge will only be applicable until the middle of the month when assimilation into Yahoo becomes mandatory :-(
  • Dan Rubin · 2 years ago
@Jina: Yeah, you can still use it, but you should change the font so it matches the Yahoo! logotype... ;)
  • Jina Bolton · 2 years ago
PFFT! Like you'll change yours when you get *forced* over. meh.
  • Jina Bolton · 2 years ago
Hey, I just noticed you changed your site a little. "SXSW Web Awards Edition". Nice. :P hehe
  • Krystyn · 2 years ago
I honestly don't mind the assimilation so much, but could they make it easier to sign in? Geez. That process has so many screens, it may as well include a fingerprint scan and signature. ;)

i've been with flickr since the start, and i just hate this yahoo account stuff. errggh. its just so pathetic , with no added value to the end user.

    bye bye flickr

    hello 23hq.com
  • Christine · 2 years ago
I disagree with those that say there is "no value to tthe end user" as Flickr needed to do this to allow them to then offer things that they could not do before. They could have handled it all better, but they are admitting that themselves.

That said, I'm totally stoked about adding "OldSkool" to my icon over there tonight.
  • Eric Meyer · 2 years ago
What font did you use to create these? It's so small that I wouldn't be able to tell even if I were a typography nerd, and I'd like to know in case I need to create one with a custom orientation.
  • Dan Rubin · 2 years ago
@Eric: It's Myriad Pro, which looks great at 9px/10px if you use "Crisp" anti-aliasing in Photoshop (or if you set your text in Fireworks).

I'll send you the PSD so you can create your own versions :)
